What is Transit-Oriented Development?

Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) is a way of developing housing, businesses, retail, and recreation along transit routes. In our city, Transit-Oriented Development would mean focusing future development along WSTA bus routes. When communities are well connected with transit, walking, biking, and getting around without a car becomes safer and more convenient.

What is Bus Rapid Tranist?

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a type of bus system that moves faster and more reliably than a regular bus system. It does this by having a dedicated bus lane, priority at traffic signals, and other features that make the bus rapid. Several key BRT features are shown below.

Transit Survey!

We surveyed the community about the types of development you’d like to see along WSTA Routes and along which routes you think development would be best for Winston-Salem residents. The results of this survey are now being analyzed and will help us prioritize WSTA route and service improvements.

You can still provide your feedback!

Show us where you’d like to see different types of transit by labeling the map linked below.

Find instructions on how to leave your feedback on your preferred development style in the video below.

Recent Public Meeting Recap

Tuesday, July 29, 2025 | 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. | Central Library

We recently held a public meeting to explain the importance of combining transit and affordable housing along WSTA bus routes. We hope that by providing housing near transit routes, we can create job opportunities, increase car-free mobility options, and foster a vibrant downtown community.

At the meeting, residents shared where they would like to see various development types around new and proposed Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) bus routes. See our engagement board results below.
